Sygils and Spell Circles
Gaining power is a concept that fascinates most, and there are a few accessible ways for Crystali to do this.
Sygils
Sygils, sometimes referred to as marks, can help focus magic and make it more powerful. They can either develop naturally through experience, or they can be meditated upon intentionally to achieve specific results.
No matter the method, use of a mark always indicates a skilled individual and is not the most common sight.
Learning an existing Sygil can take a lot longer than creating your own, so it is only done if the effects are specifically desired. Some Sygils are easier to learn than others.
Sygils are not made in a traditional sense where they are drawn out by hand, but rather a projection that is the result of intense focus and intention. Their visual representation is rarely set on paper, most commonly they will be seen as part of casting a spell. One cannot really learn a Sygil with the visual representation of it alone, as that is only one aspect of a multifaceted skill.
Sygils also have elements to them, which can limit who can use them. Most Sygils can still be used by other elements, but results may vary. Their position on the Nophran Array is a good way to determine the probability of success with a mark of a different element. Opposite elements cannot succeed, while the odds of success and accuracy increase the closer to a matching element it is.
When trying to use a Sygil, if the user is not capable, the spell will simply fail. They are mostly considered a safe tool. However, trying to repeatedly 'brute force' them can result in injury. Most commonly, it can shatter cast channels, which is a permanent injury that dulls their ability to control magic.
Spell Circle
Those who do not have access to a Sygil may make use of the Nophran array. This spell circle has been passed down for generations as a tool to help magic users attain higher levels of power in a safe and predictable way. This is an incredibly common sight in Nophra. Its balanced design allows for all elements to be controlled and amplified reliably. It is a jack of all trades and master of none.
